Pingtung Christmas Festival 2026: the south's big Christmas lights

The Pingtung Christmas Festival lights up Pingtung Park and the streets around it from 6 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and a second zone around Cifeng Temple then carries the season from 18 December all the way to 1 March 2027. This year's theme is an amusement park Christmas party, entry is free, and it is the biggest Christmas festival in the south. Dates, hours, the weekend only snow shows, and the short walk from Pingtung Station.

What you need to know, in short: The Pingtung Christmas Festival 2026, organised by the Pingtung County Government, lights its main zone at Pingtung Park in Pingtung City from Friday 6 November 2026 to Sunday 3 January 2027, daily from 17:30 to 22:00, and to 22:30 on holidays. This year's theme is Amusement Park Christmas Party (樂園聖誕派對), the festival has run since 2017, and entry is free. A second zone around Cifeng Temple (慈鳳宮) joins from Friday 18 December 2026, stays on the same hours, and runs to Monday 1 March 2027. The bubble snow shows and parades are weekend only: Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.

The Christmas festival the north forgets

Most Christmas coverage of Taiwan stops in the north, at Christmasland in Banqiao and the markets of Taipei. Pingtung is the other end of the island and, on this subject, the other centre of gravity: its county festival is the south's biggest Christmas festival, and it has been running since 2017. That longevity shows in the shape of it. This is not a single tree in a plaza but a park and its surrounding streets given over to lights for close to two months, with a second zone that then takes the season through Lunar New Year and the Lantern Festival, long after a northern Christmas would have been packed away. If your Taiwan winter is based in the south, or if you are travelling the length of the island, Pingtung is the Christmas night to plan around down here.

The main zone: Pingtung Park

The main zone fills Pingtung Park and the streets around it, Gongyuan Road and Zhonghua Road, in the middle of Pingtung City. The lights run for just under two months, from 6 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, every evening from 17:30 to 22:00, with a later finish of 22:30 on holidays. The main light show starts at 18:00 and runs from then through the evening at regular intervals, so there is no single performance you have to catch: arrive once the park is properly dark, take the show in as it comes round, and walk the lit streets at your own pace either side of it. Because there is no gate and no ticket, the visit shapes itself in the same open way as any good light season: in after dark, a slow circuit of the park, and out when you have had enough light.

The second zone: Cifeng Temple

From Friday 18 December 2026 the festival gains a second zone around Cifeng Temple (慈鳳宮). It keeps the same hours as the main zone, 17:30 to 22:00, and 22:30 on holidays, but it runs far longer: to Monday 1 March 2027. That long tail is the point of it. The main ground at Pingtung Park closes on 3 January, in step with the Christmas season itself, while the temple zone carries the lights through Lunar New Year and on to the Lantern Festival, turning one festival into a bridge between the Christmas calendar and the new year one. Plan on the park for the full festival while both zones are lit in late December, and on Cifeng Temple if your trip south falls in January or February, when it is the zone still standing.

Weekends: snow shows, parades and the market street

Two parts of the programme belong to weekends. The bubble snow shows and the parades run only on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, so a weekday evening gives you the lights and the main light show, and a weekend evening gives you the full festival. The season also opens with a market: a Christmas market street at Pingtung Park runs across the opening weekend, Saturday 7 to Sunday 8 November 2026, the first full days after the lights switch on. Put those together and the calendar has a clear shape. Opening weekend is the one for the market street, any Saturday or Sunday is the one for the snow and the parades, and the quietest version of the same lights is a weekday evening in November or early December, before the second zone and the holiday crowds arrive.

Getting there, and how to plan it

Pingtung does the transport work for you. The festival sits in Pingtung City, and Pingtung Station, on the Taiwan Railways line, is about a 12 minute walk from Pingtung Park, so the evening works as a simple train trip: arrive, walk to the park, and walk back to the station when the lights go out. Three practical points follow from the dates above. First, entry is free everywhere, so the only planning that matters is timing. Second, time your arrival for the lights, which are on from 17:30, and know that the main light show runs from 18:00 at regular intervals, so an early dinner and a later walk is a workable shape. Third, choose your dates by what you want from the festival: the opening weekend for the market street, a weekend for the snow shows and parades, late December for both zones together, or January and February for the Cifeng Temple zone alone. The event listing keeps the two zones, the dates and the hours in one place.
