Where to stay

Stay where the event is.

The stay shapes the trip. Where you stay decides how far you ride to the event, what you pass on the way and how easily you get home through the crowds. So find what you are planning to do first, let it set your dates, decide which area you want to be in before you look at hotels, and book early. On lantern festival weekends, long weekends and Penghu fireworks season, the well-placed rooms go first.

How booking around events works here

Taiwan's big travel windows are predictable: the Lunar New Year long weekend, the lantern season in February, the summer island season and the national day period in October fill the famous places early, while the hot, wet weeks of midsummer are when the same hotels ease. Island stays add a ferry or a short flight to the plan: the last boat sets your arrival day more firmly than any train.

In Taipei and Kaohsiung, stay near an MRT station and the city's distances stop mattering. Everywhere else, the choice is between the old town centre, with everything on foot, and a quieter base that costs you a ride each way. Decide by the evenings: festivals are night events, and the best base is the one you can walk home to.
