About this event
Expected date. Mazu, goddess of the sea and Taiwan's most widely worshipped deity, is honoured on her birthday, the 23rd day of the third lunar month, a date temple calendars such as Taipei's Guandu Temple state as the feast day of the Holy Mother in Heaven. The Gregorian date rests on the lunar calculation: the first day of the third lunar month in 2027 is 7 April (Qingming, 5 April, is the 29th day of the second lunar month), so the 23rd day is 29 April 2027. Temples including Dajia Jenn Lann Temple, Beigang Chaotian Temple and Lukang Tianhou Temple hold birthday rites, opera and processions, and many branch temples time their return pilgrimages to this season. It is not a public holiday.
