Penghu in season: the fireworks festival and how the islands work
The Penghu International Fireworks Festival lights Guanyinting bay in Magong through the early summer, and the 2027 dates are not yet published. This guide gives the expected window, the shape of recent editions including the longer 2026 season, and the flight, ferry and show night logistics that decide a Penghu trip.
The short answer: Penghu's season turns on one event, the Penghu International Fireworks Festival at Guanyinting Park in Magong, where fireworks and drone shows are fired over the bay after dark. Penghu County had not published 2027 dates when we checked on 27 October 2026, so our calendar carries the festival as expected, in a window of Monday 26 April to Monday 28 June 2027 that follows the festival's long standing late April to late June pattern. Read the next section before booking anything against those dates, because the most recent editions have run longer, and the honest position is that the 2027 season may end later than the window shown.
What recent editions actually did
The pattern has moved, and a useful guide has to say so. Older editions ran from late April into late June, with shows on Monday and Thursday nights; the 2023 edition ran 20 April to 29 June. The 2026 edition, announced by Penghu County and reported by ICRT from the county's release, was longer and differently shaped: trial shows on 20 and 27 April, a main season from Monday 4 May to Thursday 25 June with shows every Monday and Thursday, then Tuesday shows from 30 June to a closing night on Tuesday 25 August, 33 shows in all plus the two trials. Shows started at 9 in the evening, opening and closing nights ran longer, and the programme paired the fireworks with drone displays over Guanyinting. Our expected 2027 window is built on the older core pattern, late April to late June on Monday and Thursday nights, because that is the part of the season every recent edition has contained. If the county repeats its 2026 shape, the season will start a little later and run into August. Either way, the county's announcement, expected in the early part of 2027, is the document that settles it.
The show night, practically
The main ground is Guanyinting Recreation Area on the Magong waterfront, where the Rainbow Bridge frames the bay and the displays reflect off the water. Viewing is free and unticketed: you find a place along the waterfront, and local advice is simply to arrive early on opening, closing and holiday nights, when the crowd is at its largest. Shows begin at 9 in the evening on the recent pattern. Editions also take single shows out to the other islands and townships, in 2026 to Jibei, Wang'an and Qimei among others, which the county announces with the main schedule. A show night is weather dependent in a way a city festival is not: strong wind can postpone a display, and the county's festival channels are where a same day decision appears.
Getting there: flights and ferries
Penghu is an archipelago, and the journey is part of the planning. Domestic flights link Magong with Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Chiayi, and in fireworks season the flights on show days and weekends fill first, because the whole season's visitors arrive the same way. Ferries sail from Chiayi's Budai port and from Kaohsiung, with the Kaohsiung crossing the longer sailing; ferry schedules are seasonal and weather dependent, and sailings are cancelled in rough seas often enough that a ferry based plan needs slack at both ends. The working rule is to fly if your dates are tight, sail if they are not, and never plan to leave the islands on the last possible sailing before an onward international flight.
Staying, and getting around the islands
Most visitors stay in Magong city, within walking distance of Guanyinting, which removes the show night transport problem entirely. The main island group is linked by bridges, so a rented scooter or car opens up the full circuit: the Great Bridge between Baisha and Xiyu, the basalt columns at Daguoye, the old village at Erkan, and the beaches of the south. Scooter rental requires the correct licence for visitors, and the wind that makes Penghu famous for winter windsurfing does not fully leave in summer. Book accommodation early for any weekend inside the season: the islands' room supply is fixed, and fireworks weekends are the first to go.
When to go, given the uncertainty
Until the county publishes, the defensible plan is to target the middle of the expected season rather than its edges: Monday and Thursday nights in May and June sit inside every version of the recent pattern, while the last week of April and any date in July or August depend on which shape 2027 takes. If your trip only works with fireworks, wait for the county announcement before paying for non-refundable travel. If you are going for the islands themselves, with the fireworks as a bonus, the expected window is a reasonable basis for booking, and this page will be updated when the county's dates land. More island listings are under festivals.
