About this event
Expected date. The Bombarding Master Handan ritual is kept by Taitung's Xuanwu Temple, whose own site records that the rite has more than seventy years of history in Taitung and was registered as a county intangible cultural asset in 2007, with training camps for the volunteer Handan bearers and firecracker throwers held before each Lantern Festival. A shirtless volunteer wearing only red shorts and a headscarf stands on a palanquin and is bombarded with strings of firecrackers as the procession tours the city. Sessions run across the Lantern Festival weekend, with the principal day on Lantern Festival itself, the 15th day of the first lunar month, which is Saturday 20 February 2027. In 2026 more than thirty sessions were staged from the weekend before Lantern Festival into the following days.
