About this event

Expected date. The Ministry of the Interior's Taiwan Religious Culture Map records that the Toucheng competition is held at 23:00 on the twenty-ninth day of the seventh lunar month, the closing night of Ghost Month. Converted to the Gregorian calendar, that date is 30 August 2027, and the conversion is calculated from the official lunar schedule published by the Ministry of the Interior. Teams climb pillars over ten metres tall to reach a platform and a taller bamboo spire, competing for offerings and a flag at the top. The tradition was revived in 1991 with modern safety measures and now draws thousands of spectators.
