About this event
Expected dates. Organised by Yanshui Wumiao Temple for the god Guandi, the beehive fireworks festival sends palanquins through Yanshui on the 14th and 15th days of the first lunar month while walls of bottle rockets, the beehive castles, are fired into the crowds; Tainan's Cultural Affairs Bureau describes the custom and its Lantern Festival timing on its festival pages. In 2027 the 14th lunar day is Friday 19 February and Lantern Festival itself is Saturday 20 February (Lunar New Year Day, 6 February, plus 13 and 14 days). The main barrage peaks on the night of 20 February and runs past midnight. Full protective gear, a helmet, towel, jacket and earplugs, is essential for anyone joining the palanquin route.
