Luggage

Put the bag down. Enjoy the event.

A suitcase is dead weight at a festival, a match or a gig. Taiwan gives you three good ways to be rid of it for the day: a locker at the station, a staffed counter at the airport, or a booked spot in a neighbourhood shop. This page sets out how each one works, what it costs, and when sending the bag on ahead beats storing it.

Three ways to store a bag

Station lockers are the default: cheap, instant, and inside the station you are already passing through. Staffed storage costs a little more and buys certainty: at Taoyuan Airport a counter takes the bag off your hands, and booked shop storage through Lalalocker or Bounce reserves the space before you arrive, so a suitcase that fits no locker still fits behind a shop counter. The third way is not to store the bag at all: if you are not coming back this way, send it on to the hotel instead. That has its own page, send my luggage.

Taipei Main Station and the MRT lockers

Taipei Main Station holds two separate locker systems. Taiwan Railways runs automatic lockers there, as it does at stations across the island: Taipei's cells run from 60 x 35 x 40 cm up to 90 x 90 x 40 cm, and the electronic type bills in three hour blocks. TRA's published reference table for Taipei puts the charge between NT$30 and NT$100 per three hours depending on size, and TRA is plain that the table is for reference only: the machine on the day sets the actual fee. The lockers follow the station's own opening hours, and high value items such as jewellery and gold are prohibited, so keep valuables on you.

The Taipei Metro's lockers are the second system, in MRT stations across the city and in the underground malls. They are electronic password lockers billed by the hour, with anything under an hour charged as a full hour, and each password opens the cell once only. The Metro's size guide says a large cell takes about a 29 inch suitcase and a small cell about a 20 inch one. Pay by coins, EasyCard or mobile payment. There is a hard limit: storage is capped at 24 hours, after which staff remove the bag and hold it for up to 30 days, and you can only store or collect while the station is open. Taipei City's announcement of new locker banks put the price at NT$10 per hour for a small cell and NT$20 for a large one; the rate at the machine is the one that counts.

At Taoyuan Airport

Taoyuan International Airport's left luggage is a staffed counter service, run by Pelican Delivery in both terminals, with counters in the arrivals and departures halls, and the deposit service works around the clock. Every bag is priced by the sum of its three sides and its weight. On Pelican's published table, a small bag (133 cm in total or under) costs NT$40 per three hours or NT$320 per day, a medium bag NT$60 or NT$480, a large bag NT$80 or NT$640, and an oversize bag up to 300 cm in total NT$300 or NT$720, with the daily rate halved from the second day. No single piece can exceed 300 cm in total, 200 cm on one side or 40 kg. The same counters pack and wrap bags, and they are also where the airport's luggage delivery services start, covered on our send my luggage page.

Booked storage in shops: Lalalocker and Bounce

Lalalocker is the home grown version of booked shop storage: a network of local shops, cafes, boutiques and guesthouses near stations and sights that take bags behind the counter. You book and pay online, show your confirmation and ID at the shop, and the drop off takes about half a minute. In Taiwan a large bag (longest side over 45 cm, so suitcases, strollers and large backpacks) is NT$150 per day and a small one NT$70 per day; anything under a day is charged as a full day, and cancellation is free any time before storage begins. Every bag carries a compensation guarantee of up to NT$10,000, and the shops are checked in person.

Bounce runs the same model internationally, in English, through its app and website: local shops and hotels near stations and sights take your bag, you can book ahead or on the spot, cancellation is free, there are no limits on bag size or number, and every booking carries up to US$10,000 of protection. Its Taipei page lists 13 or more storage spots, around Taipei Main Station, the Red House and Taipei 101 among them, from NT$100 per bag per day.

Storing it, or sending it?

If the bag is heading the same way you are at the end of the day, storage wins. If it is not, sending usually does: Taiwan's courier networks will take a suitcase from a convenience store counter or a hotel desk and have it at your next address the next day, and the airport counters will send an arriving bag on to a city hotel the same day.
