Luggage

Send the suitcase. Travel with a day bag.

Taiwan's courier networks are the traveller's cheat code: hand your suitcase over at a convenience store, a hotel desk or an airport counter, and it is waiting at your next hotel the next day, or the same day on the traveller services. This page explains how door to door sending works here, who runs it, what it costs, and how to ship a bag home when the trip ends.

How sending a bag works here

Door to door sending is a parcel service, and luggage is one of its standard uses. You fill in a waybill with the destination address (your next hotel's name and address, with your own name and check in date on it), hand the bag over, and the network does the rest. The national networks run overnight, so the promise is next day, not same day: keep one night's clothes, chargers and medicines in the bag you carry. Two traveller services break that rule on set routes, Pelican at the airport and LuggAgent between hotels, and both are below.

T-Cat, the black cat

T-Cat (黑貓宅急便), run by President Transnet under a technical tie up with Japan's Yamato, is the name you will see most; takkyubin arrived in Taiwan with the same black cat. Its room temperature service takes a bag whose three sides total 150 cm or less and that weighs 20 kg or less, and luggage forwarding, including hotel luggage forwarding, is one of its listed uses. The price is by size, not by distance or weight: on the main island it runs from NT$130 for 60 cm or under to NT$250 for 121 to 150 cm. Send today and it arrives tomorrow in the normal run of things, with a Sunday in between pushing delivery a day. Drop off is everywhere: T-Cat's own stations, 7-Eleven, FamilyMart and OK Mart counters, shops flying the T-Cat agent flag, or book a home pickup by phone or online at no extra charge.

Pelican and the Taoyuan Airport counters

Pelican Delivery (台灣宅配通) is the other national network, and the airport is its home ground. Its counters at Taoyuan International Airport, in the arrivals and departures halls of both terminals, take bags in both directions. Leaving Taiwan: book a home pickup by 14:00 three days before departure, or drop the bag at a Pelican office, and collect it at the airport counter on departure day. Arriving: hand the bag over at the airport counter and it is delivered to your address the next day, with bags handed over after 17:00 rolling a day. Pelican's airport delivery is priced by size, from NT$140 for a bag of 60 cm in total or under up to NT$330 at 180 cm on the main island. The counters also run a same day service to hotels, for bags up to 180 cm and 30 kg: hand a bag over at the airport in the morning and it reaches a hotel in Taipei or New Taipei the same day for NT$500 a bag, or a Taichung hotel for NT$660.

Same day between hotels: LuggAgent

LuggAgent is built for travellers rather than parcels: same day delivery between airports, hotels and homestays in seven Taiwan cities, Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Hualien, Kenting and Taitung. Leave the bags at your hotel front desk in the morning (send out times run from 09:00 to 11:00) and they are delivered by 21:00 the same day, or by 18:00 with the priority option. Prices start from US$50 for a route with up to two bags (Taipei to Taoyuan Airport is from US$53), every bag carries US$500 of cover, and most routes need booking 24 to 72 hours ahead.

Shipping a bag home

When the trip ends and the suitcase is full of shopping, the same thinking works internationally. Send My Bag ships luggage door to door between countries: book online, print your labels at home or have them sent to you, and the bag is collected from your hotel, home or office and tracked to your address abroad, so the flight home is taken with hand luggage only. Full disclosure: we have applied to join Send My Bag's affiliate programme, and while that application is pending this is a plain link and we earn nothing from it.
