Things to do in Kaohsiung.
The port city turned its harbour into its living room: Pier-2's warehouses, Cijin's island beaches, the Lotus Pond temples and Fo Guang Shan inland.
Pier-2 Art Center
The old harbour warehouses as an arts district: big exhibitions in the sheds, sculpture on the quays, the Hamasen railway museum ground and the light rail sliding past. Kaohsiung's default afternoon.
How to book: The grounds are free; exhibitions are ticketed at their doors. Yanchengpu MRT and the light rail both stop here.
Lotus Pond and its pagodas
The pond in Zuoying ringed with temples: the Dragon and Tiger Pagodas you enter by the dragon and leave by the tiger, the Confucius temple, and towers reflected in the water at dusk.
How to book: Free to walk. The pagodas take small donations; Zuoying station and the MRT cover the area, and the old city walls are next door.
Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum
The vast museum and memorial hall at the Fo Guang Shan monastery in Dashu: eight pagodas, the great bronze Buddha above them, and exhibitions that draw the whole south. Part pilgrimage site, part museum day out.
How to book: Free entry; donations welcome. Buses run from Zuoying HSR station and the monastery; dress modestly and allow a half day.
Cijin Island
The sandbar island five minutes by ferry from Gushan: a lighthouse, a Dutch-era fort, seafood street and a long Pacific-facing beach. Kaohsiung's seaside, reached like a local.
How to book: Ferries run every few minutes and take EasyCard; scooters and bikes ride the same boat. No advance booking; sunset is the busy crossing.
The British Consulate at Takow
The red-brick consulate residence of 1879 on the hill above the harbour mouth: exhibitions inside, and the harbour view from the terrace over tea. The path down passes the temple below.
How to book: Tickets at the gate, combined with the residence and the former warehouse site. Combine with Cijin across the water in one day.
Planning the stay itself: the city guides cover what is on, and the hotels page covers where to sleep near it.
