Things to do in New Taipei.

The ring city around the capital holds its day trips: Jiufen's lanes, the Pingxi railway, Yehliu's rocks and the Danshui river mouth.

Jiufen Old Street

The hillside mining town of teahouses and lantern-lit lanes above the north coast, famous for taro balls, the Shuqi Road steps and the sea view at dusk. Crowds are part of the deal on weekends.

How to book: Buses run from Taipei (Zhongxiao Fuxing and Ximen) and a train-plus-bus route goes via Ruifang. No entry fee; you pay as you eat. Go on a weekday if you can.

Yehliu Geopark

The cape of hoodoo stones eroded into shapes, the Queen's Head above all, on the Wanli coast. A geology lesson you walk through, with the sea on both sides.

How to book: Tickets at the gate. Buses from Taipei Main Station and Danshui; combine with Jiufen or the north coast in one day.

The Pingxi Line and Shifen

The little branch railway through the valley: Shifen's waterfall and its main street on the tracks, where sky lanterns are released on the line itself, and Pingxi town at the end of the route.

How to book: Trains run from Ruifang, roughly hourly; a one-day Pingxi Line pass is sold at stations. Lanterns are sold in the shops along the street and released where staff direct.

Danshui (Tamsui) Old Street and Fort San Domingo

The river mouth town: the old street of snacks along the water, the red-brick Fort San Domingo and the Little White House above it, and the sunset the whole city turns out for.

How to book: MRT Danshui station is the end of the red line and the start of the old street. The fort and museum sites share a small combined ticket, sold at the gate.

Planning the stay itself: the city guides cover what is on, and the hotels page covers where to sleep near it.
