Things to do in Taichung.

Central Taiwan's city: a serious museum, a famous opera house building, the rainbow village, wetlands at the coast and the country's biggest night market.

National Museum of Natural Science

One of Taiwan's most visited museums: dinosaurs, a space theatre and science halls on a big campus in the north district, with the botanical garden across the road. It anchors the dataset's Taichung exhibition listings too.

How to book: Tickets at the museum; the IMAX-style space theatre is a separate ticket and fills on weekends. Closed Mondays, like most Taiwan museums.

National Taichung Theater

Toyo Ito's cave-like concrete landmark in the Seventh Redevelopment Zone: worth visiting for the building alone, with performances, a rooftop garden and design shops inside.

How to book: The building's public areas are free in the daytime; performances are ticketed through the theatre. Guided tours run on a schedule and are booked at the desk.

Rainbow Village

The veterans' village painted head to toe by one resident, Huang Yung-fu, in saturated colour: a small site, a big story, and Taichung's most photographed lanes.

How to book: Free entry; donations and the small shop support its upkeep. City buses reach the Nantun site; go early for the lanes to yourself.

Gaomei Wetlands

The boardwalk over the tidal flats at the Dajia River mouth: fiddler crabs, wind turbines and the west coast's most famous sunset. Flat, easy and beautiful in the late afternoon.

How to book: Free entry. The boardwalk closes at high tide in strong wind; shuttle buses run from Qingshui station on weekends.

Fengjia Night Market

The biggest night market in Taiwan by most counts, around Feng Chia University: the place new market food is invented, from cheese potato to devil chicken steak. A dinner strategy is required.

How to book: Free entry. Evenings until late; city buses from Taichung Station stop at Fengjia. Weekday nights are the manageable version.

Planning the stay itself: the city guides cover what is on, and the hotels page covers where to sleep near it.
