Things to do in Tainan.

The oldest city is a walking museum: forts, towers and temples from the Dutch and Qing centuries, the Chimei Museum in Rende, and the country's deepest food culture.

Anping Fort (Fort Zeelandia)

The Dutch fort of 1624 at the old harbour: brick walls, a watchtower and the museum of Tainan's first century, at the head of Anping's old street of snacks.

How to book: Tickets at the gate. Combine with the old street and the canal side in one half day; the fort closes earlier than the street food does.

Chihkan Tower (Fort Provintia)

The Dutch administrative centre turned Chinese temple complex in the middle of the old town: red roofs, stelae carried by stone turtles, and carp ponds in the courtyard.

How to book: Tickets at the gate. It is a short walk from Tainan Station through the old town; evenings are floodlit and quieter.

Tainan Confucius Temple

Taiwan's first Confucius temple, from 1665: red walls, old banyans and the quietest ground in the city, opposite a lane of cafes and the old school quarter.

How to book: The grounds are free; the hall takes a small entry. The surrounding streets are the city's best slow morning.

Chimei Museum

A private museum of Western art, arms and instruments in a palace-like building in Rende, with the special exhibition programme our calendar lists each season. Book the timed entry and take the train to Bao'an station, a short walk away.

How to book: Timed tickets, best bought online ahead for special exhibitions; the grounds and lake are free. Closed Wednesdays.
