Christmas and New Year in Taiwan: the complete guide
Taiwan's Christmas is a season of light in a country that takes its illuminations seriously: six weeks of Christmasland in Banqiao, a German market on tour, Christmas festivals in the south, and a Christmas Day that is a public holiday again, before the year ends with fireworks fired off Taipei 101 itself. The whole season, north to south, with confirmed and expected dates labelled as honestly as our calendar labels them.
What you need to know, in short: Taiwan takes Christmas seriously as a season of light rather than a religious festival. The anchor is Christmasland in New Taipei City, six weeks of projection mapping, light zones and markets in Banqiao from Friday 13 November to Sunday 27 December 2026, free to walk through, with a German Christmas Market touring three cities inside the season. The south answers with its own Christmas festivals, the concert halls put on their festive programmes, and Christmas Day itself is a public holiday again, which makes the closing weekend of Christmasland a three day weekend. The year then ends the way only Taipei ends it, with fireworks fired from Taipei 101 at midnight on 31 December. This guide runs the whole season, with the honest labels our calendar always carries: confirmed where an organiser or the Tourism Administration has published the edition, expected where the date follows the established pattern.
Christmasland: the anchor
Everything in the northern season hangs off Banqiao. Christmasland fills New Taipei City Civic Plaza, Banqiao Station Square and the surrounding plazas for 45 days, with the projection mapping show on the City Hall facade as its centrepiece and markets and weekend concerts filling the edges. There is no gate and no ticket; arrive after dark and walk the zones at your own pace. Weekday evenings in late November are the calmest way to see the same lights, and the season's full planner, transport and all, is our Christmasland guide. Banqiao station, with its own metro and high speed rail services, does the transport work, and central Taipei is a short ride east.
The German Christmas Market, on tour
Inside the season, one market brings the European version. The German Christmas Market, organised by the German Trade Office Taipei, plays three weekends in three cities: at Christmasland in Banqiao from 4 to 6 December, at Taipei Expo Park from 11 to 13 December, and at Taoyuan Arts Plaza from 18 to 20 December. Sausages, stollen, mulled wine and gifts, entry free, food and drink paid as you go. The Banqiao weekend is the one that pairs the market with the full Christmasland ground. Our guide to the market covers all three legs.
The season in the south, and the island's other lights
Christmas in Taiwan is not only a Taipei story. The Pingtung Christmas Festival fills Pingtung Park with light installations, giant trees and weekend snowfall shows; our window, from early November into the first days of January, follows the county's established pattern and is labelled expected, and our Pingtung guide covers the south's biggest Christmas ground. Kaohsiung builds its Christmas around Central Park, where the city's festival lit up on 28 November last year and ran a Golden Week of main stage concerts from 20 to 24 December; the 2026 edition follows the same late November pattern and is the one to check as the city publishes it. Smaller and further out, Douliu's Yunlin Christmas Celebration pairs an afternoon international market at Pangshu Forest Park with an evening concert on 19 December, labelled expected on our calendar. And the island's winter light festivals run alongside Christmas itself: the Valley Light Festival lights the mountain resort towns of Lishan and Guguan through to 3 January, confirmed on the Tourism Administration's listing, and the Liyu Lake Waterfront Light Festival in Hualien runs nightly from 28 November to 31 January.
The season's concert
One concert carries the festive programme. The King's Singers with the Taipei Symphony Orchestra play a Christmas concert at the National Concert Hall on Friday 18 December, the British vocal ensemble's close harmony carols alongside the orchestra, with tickets from NT$500 through Opentix. It is the season's formal night out, and it sits in the middle of the German Market's Taoyuan weekend and the Christmasland run, which makes a tidy double for anyone based in the north.
Music across the New Year: Chiayi
The season's longest party is a band festival. The Chiayi City International Band Festival runs from 18 December to 1 January, two weeks of wind bands, street parades and outdoor concerts across Chiayi City, confirmed on the Tourism Administration's listing and free to watch. It gives the Christmas and New Year stretch a base outside the capital: brass in the streets by day, and the city counting down with everyone else on the 31st. Our festival guide covers the fortnight.
The winter pairing: hot springs
December is hot spring season, and the Christmas trip pairs naturally with a soak. Beitou, at the end of the metro's red line, is the easy version from a Taipei base; Jiaoxi in Yilan adds its own hot spring lantern festival to the season. Our hot spring season guide maps Beitou, Jiaoxi and the island's winter bathing, and the bookable version of the Beitou afternoon is the Spring City Resort's open air pools, at the source of the springs above the town.

Christmas Day: a holiday again
Friday 25 December 2026 is Constitution Day, restored as a public holiday in 2025 after a quarter of a century as an ordinary working day, and in 2026 it lands on a Friday, which makes a three day weekend to Sunday 27 December. That weekend is also Christmasland's closing weekend, so the season's busiest nights and its last nights are the same nights: expect full trains, full hot spring hotels and the Banqiao plazas at their peak, and book the weekend early if it is yours. Shops, malls and attractions keep holiday hours and run their festive programmes; what closes is offices and schools. The day has a double character that is worth knowing: it is Christmas by custom and Constitution Day by law, and the city celebrates the first while taking the second off.
New Year's Eve: the tower, and the earlier show
The year ends in Xinyi. The Taipei New Year's Party fills City Hall square with six hours of performers in relay before the countdown, and at midnight the Taipei 101 fireworks fire from the tower itself. Both are free, both are confirmed on the city's listing, and the crowds decide the whole plan: our New Year's Eve at Taipei 101 guide covers the viewing spots, Elephant Mountain among them, and the trip home in full. Two additions belong here. The observatory, on the 89th and 91st floors, is the one part of the night that is bookable rather than a crowd to join, and its sunset and New Year slots sell out first.

And New Taipei fires earlier: the Shining New Taipei 1314 Cross-River Fireworks, carried on our calendar as expected, are timed at 20:26 for 13 minutes and 14 seconds over the Tamsui River on the previous edition's pattern, early enough to watch from Tamsui or Bali and still ride the metro back to Xinyi before the countdown. Beyond the capital, our calendar carries the other main stages as expected dates on their fixed patterns: Hualien's countdown party at the Dongdamen Night Market, Taitung's countdown concert at Seaside Park, and Taoyuan's New Year's Eve party. The morning after is a holiday too: Founding Day, Friday 1 January, opens with flag raising ceremonies and, for the energetic, a sunrise marathon in Taipei.
Where to stay
The base decides the season. Banqiao puts Christmasland on your doorstep and the high speed rail under your hotel; a Taipei base, in Xinyi or around the main station, trades a short metro ride for the capital's wider choice of hotels and puts the New Year party in walking distance. What is not optional is timing: the Christmas long weekend and the nights around 31 December are the two peaks of Taiwan's winter, and both fill early.
